Exploring Yangon
Shwedegon Pagoda

Shwedegon Pagoda is a 98-metre gilded stupa that lies to the west that dominates the Yangon city skyline. It is the country’s most sacred Buddhist pagoda with relics of the past four Buddhas enshrined within.

The Gold seen on the stupa is made of genuine gold plates, covering the brick structure attached by traditional rivets. People as well as monarchs have long helped maintain the pagoda by donating gold. Shoes must be removed prior to entering this most sacred of sites.
