Solartaxi stars at Shangri-La Guangzhou
Photo Guests at Shangri-La Hotel, Guangzhou had the opportunity to go by "Solartaxi" to the China Import and Export Fair, more commonly known as the "Canton Fair", held on April 28.

During the trip to the Pazhou Complex, guests learnt more about the solar powered vehicle brought in by Mr Louis Palmer, the Swiss adventurer, who ferried them to the event.

The highlight was the flexible steering wheel that could slide across the dashboard, allowing passengers to control the vehicle, which runs at a maximum speed of 90 kilometres per hour.

"Every contribution, be it an energy saving practice or devise, an awareness enhancing campaign or new carbon friendly technologies, every activity, regardless how big or small, is needed today to preserve our planet," said Mr Reto Klauser, the hotel's general manager.

The "Solartaxi", which took three years to build with involvement from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and three Swiss universities, uses top-notch technologies.

Since setting off for his first journey around the world in the Solartaxi on July 3, 2007, Mr Palmer has travelled to over 25 countries and shared his two-seater cabin with ministers, journalists, backpackers and a Jordanian prince.

He will spend 39 days in China visiting universities, research institutes, environmental groups and also the Shanghai New Energy Expo.

Rasa Sayang wins green award
Photo The environmental initiatives taken by Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa, Penang, since its re-opening, have won it the ASEAN Green Hotel Award 2008.

According to Suleiman Tunku Abdul Rahman, director of communications, the resort has pursued an ambitious programme to minimise its impact on the environment.

The most rewarding project is the switching from diesel burning boilers to heat pumps, eliminating the need to use diesel fuel completely, he said.

The installation of heat pumps has not only resulted in a noticeable reduction in fuel consumption but has also brought certification from SIRIM (M) Sdn Bhd (an independent certification body in Malaysia).

Various measures have been introduced including seeking cooperation from guests in reducing wastage for water, detergent and energy used during their stay.

The ASEAN Green Hotel Award is given to a hotel which is environmentally friendly and adopts energy conservation measures. The award was given to only five hotels in Malaysia.

Blu Lobster Magic
"Shangri-La Hotel, Beijing has one of the most exciting restaurants in the city: the Blu Lobster, in which award-winning Irish chef, Brian McKenna, prepares the rare blue lobster. If one is lucky he can sit at the chef's table in the middle of the kitchen, where McKenna serves coconut milk on dry ice personally - a little bit of molecular cuisine."
